Group Mystery Games
What are group mystery games?
A group mystery game can come in two forms. One is where it is a mystery or a murder mystery played by a group of people or two, a mystery game where the players form small groups to play.
Examples can include detective games, role playing games or the traditional murder mystery party.
What is the difference between a group and an individual game?
In some mystery games the players work as individuals. They often involve an individual mingling with a script and interacting with other guests. In a group mystery game normally small teams are formed and even if you go out on your own your report back to your team. As a team you synthesise the information and try and solve the mystery.

What size group can you have?
There is no real limit. Games can involve a total group of as little as 6 people right up to 300 people.
How many groups can you break players into?
This depends on the total number of people at your party. Generally speaking smaller teams are better than larger ones. Teams of 4 to 8 people work best. So if you have 20 people then 3 to 5 teams, 60 people 8 to 15 groups and so on.
What are the advantages?
Like everything in life there are pros and cons to all types of games. The major advantage of group mystery games is that they take pressure off of your guests. Because they work in groups your guests can choose their level of involvement. Some of your extraverted guests will put on a show while the others will sort information or scribe. Everyone is important and everyone has a good time.
What if some people don't want to play?
As with the advantages if someone wants to hang back that is totally fine.
Does the group or an individual win?
Most games have individual awards for best dressed etc. but usually the whole team wins.
Are they good for team building?
Absolutely! They are fun and require the team members to use their individual strengths for the benefit of the team. Many organisations use them as ice breakers. If you are having a conference with people from different departments you can split the departments up and have mixed teams. This will help your staff get to know each other in a fun way.
How long do they run for?
Normally 2 to 3 hours but you can make them as long or as short as you like.
